LPG Tank Types

Cylinder Tank

This is a single-hole, cylinder tank.
It must be mounted horizontally, with the valves at the correct angle (normally 30 degrees up from horizontal).
The picture shows the tank with the frame used to secure it to the vehicle.
Also shown are:
Multivalve,
Gas-tight box, vent hose and bulkhead fittings (required if the tank is mounted inside the vehicle),

Clinder tanks are available in many different sizes, from a 6ltr to a 230ltr!

Vertical spare wheel tank
(fitted to a jeep grand cherokee)

This is a single-hole, vertical toroidal tank.
It must be mounted vertically, and is secured through the central hole, just behind the cover, to the stand that is bolted to the floor of the vehicle. A strap is then placed over the tank and bolted to each side of the frame.
The multivalve is mounted in the central hole, just behind the cover.
It is possible to see the vent hose which comes fromn the back of the tank, exiting through the floor.

Ellipsoidal Tank  (80ltr)

the ellipsoidal is made by a company called Practco and is only available as a four hole, Its unusual design makes it perfect for fiiting under Range Rovers and discoverys.

Full Toroidal Tank

This is a single-hole, full toroidal tank.
It is similar to the toroidal tank, but has the centre filled in to give greater fuel capacity.
Full toroidal tanks are often mounted underneath vehicles, in place of a spare wheel, but may be mounted inside.
It must be mounted horizontally, and is secured using the lugs on the top of the tank.
The multivalve is mounted in the outside, lower edge of the tank.

Toroidal Tank or donut

(Fitted to a P38 Range rover)

This is a single-hole, toroidal tank.
The tank has a hole through the centre and is sometimes called a donut tank.
It is designed to be mounted in a spare-wheel well.
It must be mounted horizontally and is normally secured by bolts through the central hole. This one also has fixing on the top edge.
The multivalve is mounted in the central hole, just beneath the cover.

This is a picture of a conversion I did some years ago, the more common tank to fit in a P38 these days is a 95ltr full toroidal.

Four Hole Full Toroidal

Four hole tanks have the advantage of being a bit easier to fit in some cases. Also they fill quicker due to the fact that they have a dedicated fill valve which has a larger port that a multivalve. The fill valve can be fitted with either a 8mm feed pipe or a large 'jic' or flexible hose, similar to a hydrolic hose. This again helps with filling speed.

The downside is ofcourse, price. Four hole tanks can sometimes be as much as double the price of a equivalant single hole with multivalve.

Four hole cylinder tank

As mentioned above there are some bennifitts to the four hole configuration.
